Getting started on the server

When you start the game you will find yourself in your underwear somewhere on the map without any equipment or clue where you are, possibly surrounded by scary creatures. So, what to do?

Any survival program on TV tells you, you need 3 things to start off your survival adventure, Water, Food, Shelter and that's basically what you need in this game as well.

Water is usually not a problem as it is around everywhere and unlike IRL you can drink it all, so that's easy.

Food is relatively easy too as you can pick berries from small bushes and scrubs and eat them, they are not very nutritious, but they fill you up so you can go another while. Later on you will get better ways to feed yourself.

Berries
You can gather various berries from plants and they all have a specific use:

Amarberry
This yellow berry grows mostly on the beaches. Tasty, and can be used to make yellow dye

Azulberry
This blue berry grows mostly in dense jungles. Tasty, and can be used to make blue dye.

Mejoberry
This wild berry grows mostly on mountains. While not tasty on its own, its juices improve almost every meal.

20px-Narcoberry.png
Narcoberry
This fairly common black berry makes you sleepy when you eat it. Bitter, but can be used to make black dye.

Stimberry
This fairly common white berry can be eaten in a pinch to recover food, stamina, and lose torpidity, but it will dehydrate you. Bitter, but can be used to make white dye.

This red berry grows mostly in wide open grasslands. Tasty, and can be used to make red dye.

Shelter is the one that is the challenge here. To be able to build a shelter, you need building materials and you will need to learn the technology to build stuff. The first ‘tier’ of building is the Thatch building that you build with Thatch, Wood and Fiber. Fiber you get the same way as you get berries, by picking it from plants and Thatch and Wood you get from trees. By punching a tree, you will get both, but you also hurt your hands, so better not do that to long.

A better way is to build yourself some tools. A stone Pick Axe and Hatchet are the tools of choice when you just start out. The pick Axe you can build right away, so once you have the needed resources go to you inventory, click the CRAFTABLES tab, choose the Pick Axe and click the CRAFT ITEM button to build one. Once done equip it by selecting it in your inventory and click the USE ITEM button of drag it into one of the 10 slots at the bottom left of you inventory to give it a shortcut key, you now have your first tool!

The Pick Axe is good for getting Thatch from trees and Flint from rocks, but for more efficient gathering of wood and stone you will need a Hatchet, which you will need to research first.

Research
For everything you do in ARK you get XP and after gathering a certain amount of XP you will go up 1 level giving you a choice of 9 attributes and giving you ENGRAM POINT you can use to research technology.

After you have researched the needed components and gathered the needed resources to build your first shelter go ahead and craft the items. A shelter consists of at least 1 foundation (but better to have a few more, for a larger shelter) walls and either a flat or sloped roof and a doorway with a door. You can start off with a small shelter and build it up along the way, just make sure you have something to sleep in at night and worry about expanding it later or changing it to other materials when you research that.

Dying
It is not a question of IF you die in this game, but WHEN you die and it all depends a lot on the location you started your adventure (something you don’t have much influence in). Once you die you will get asked in what general location you want to respawn. This is by no means an exact location, but the map is split up in a few regions and you get to pick one. Chances are you will not find your shelter again when you die, so you will have to build a new one. When you die you will also lose all the stuff you were carrying, so it is really starting from scratch. To make sure you can respawn at the location you want to you will have to build a Sleeping Bag or a bed and place that in the location (usually your base). Once you have done that you can pick a specific bed you want to respawn at. This however does not mean you will keep your stuff when you die. There is a way to get back the stuff you were carrying with you and this is to find your dead body and loot your own stuff back. You might be able to find it again, but you will also lose your stuff a few times for sure.

Queen of the Ludolands (and beer)
heya, I'm definetly interested, but can we maybe try that for like one month? cause if the game doesn't work (unsuccessful streaming), I will have to stop streaming it....running a server is a bit too expensive for keeping it up just for fun (I'd say)....but I'd love to try it! i think scrap would be interested, too. lets ask him in the chat later on!

..but it seems Ark or steam dont like me. The game wont start  I dont know why maybe its about my components. Ill fix it soon but today my components are :

Prozessor : AMD Athlon64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+
Arbeitsspeicher (RAM) : 2,50 GB (dont ask me ...)
Grafikkartentyp : AMD Radeon HD 6570 (2048MB)
Windows 7 Ultimate (32Bit)
DirectX-Version DirectX 10

actually i think its the RAM and 32-bit version, ARK needs a lot more of memory (4GB) and a Windows7-64bit version? True?

First i need to save all my files before i fix the RAM and the Windows-version, hope it works otherwise i need to buy a new PC.

The main problem seems to be the 32-bit Win, of course. If your mainboard supports 8GB RAM, you should buy 8GB (or 2x4GB). Your graphic card seems to be better than mine (NVidia GTX 285 with 1GB). My CPU is an AMD Phenom II X4 965 (3400 MHz) and I have 8GB RAM running Win8.1. At high settings with 1080p my PC fail. With medium settings everything is fluent, but looks unspectacularly. I'm not sure at this point if I want to spend money for PC upgrades, I'll wait what happen till next year.

There is no use in buying 8GB of memory with a 32 bit OS. A 32 bit OS can only handle max. 4GB. So if you get more memory you need to upgrade to a 64 bit OS too.

Sure. His CPU supports 64-Bit. RAM is cheap and the OS...Ark supports Linux too. No big problem.

Thats true @RAZER .

@Cryorvus In my opinion it doesnt make sense to upgrade an older version of RAM Type to the max. (4 x 1.8V DDR2 DIMM sockets supporting up to 16GB) they are too expensive.. so i´ll buy a 2GB RAM bolt to proof it at my "Gigabyte GA-M52L-S3P" Mainboard.

@all sorry for offtopic

Uhhh, DDR2 . CPU Socket must be old too (AM2?). But I wont recommend to buy another 2GB RAM modul, except you can find the same type you already have one. Give me time. I'll have a look tomorrow. Maybe I can find some old 2GB DDR2 modules that will 100% work fine together. Maybe I can find 4 of them ;) and send you a package (was heißt Luftpolsterbrief auf englisch ?). But this will cost you a ludoBeer one day.

P.S.: Which level Mhz the mainboard RAM bus supports?

Well he would only be able to use that RAM with Linux then, a bit of a waste I'd say, unless you can find it for very cheap or for free somewhere. I can have a look around to see if I have some old DDR2 memory around for you.

Don't have any DDR2 memory larger then 512MB, so thats no use I guess.
